Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for your flight to Paro, Bhutan. Upon arrival, be warmly greeted by Bhutanese representatives with the traditional Khada welcome. Your adventure kicks off with a visit to the historic Kyichu Temple, one of the oldest temples dating back to the 7th century, built by a Tibetan king. Out of 108 temples originally constructed, only three remain today—two in Bhutan and one in Tibet. Then, explore Jokhang and the impressive Rinpung Dzong, the monastic and administrative hub of Paro District. In the evening, arrive in Thimphu, check into your hotel, and after dinner, feel free to explore the nearby cafes and bars for a quiet night out.
Get ready for a day full of exploration. Start at Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang), where a 167-foot statue of Buddha overlooks the city. Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a spiritual monument known for its golden spires and constant activity, with elderly locals walking in a circle to dispel negativity. Head to the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan's national animal, the Takin. Dive into Bhutan’s artistic heritage at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (also known as the Painting School), where you can watch students practice Bhutan’s traditional arts. Then, step back in time at the Folk Heritage Museum, where exhibits recreate the traditional rural lifestyle. After lunch, visit the Handmade Paper Factory and see how ancient techniques are still used to produce paper. At the Post Office, create personalized stamps as keepsakes. Get a taste of Bhutan's national sport, archery, at the Changlimithang Stadium, and visit the historic Changangkha Lhakhang, Thimphu's oldest temple. Conclude the day with some shopping at the Bhutan Handicraft Emporium and Norzin Lam, where you can browse authentic local crafts.
Embark on a scenic drive across the Black Mountains and the Pele La Pass (3,300 meters). Enjoy breathtaking landscapes during the 7-hour journey to Trongsa, where you'll visit the majestic Trongsa Dzong, founded in 1543. This fortress features intricate courtyards and passageways, and houses 23 temples. Finish the day in a traditional Bhutanese lodge, where serenity and tranquility await.
Today, journey deeper into Bhutan’s countryside. Begin with a visit to Gangtey Gonpa, the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan. Continue to the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, a vast glacial valley surrounded by coniferous forests and dwarf bamboo. This valley is famous for being the winter home of the black-necked cranes, which migrate from the Tibetan Plateau. If traveling from late October to February, you may spot these rare birds. Visit the Black-Necked Crane Visitor Centre to learn more about their conservation efforts.
After an early start, drive to Punakha, Bhutan's former capital. Visit the picturesque Punakha Dzong, built in 1637, sitting at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. Capture beautiful photos with this iconic landmark as your backdrop. On the way, stop at Chimi Lhakhang, an auspicious fertility temple built in 1499, surrounded by lush paddy and mustard fields. After lunch, cross Dochula Pass and visit the Druk Wangyal Chortens, a site of 108 stupas commissioned by the eldest Queen Mother. Arrive in Paro for an overnight stay.
Today, prepare for a highlight of your Bhutan trip—a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). Perched dramatically on a cliff 800 meters above the Paro Valley, the monastery is a spiritual site where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated. For an added experience, you can opt for a partial hike on horseback (at your own expense). After the hike, visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress built in the 17th century. In the afternoon, visit a local farm where you can try Ara, Bhutan's local rice wine, and learn how to cook Ema Datshi, Bhutan’s national dish made with chilies and cheese. End the day with some last-minute shopping at the local market in Paro Town.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home, taking with you memories that will last a lifetime.
