Today will be a day dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the peaceful mountain environment and helping prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) before reaching Himalayan regions above 3,000 meters in the days ahead. Early in the morning, you will set out on a hike to Paro Taktsang, famously known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery and revered as the meditation retreat of Guru Rinpoche.
Along the hike, you will stop for lunch at the mountain cafeteria located midway up the trail. After exploring the iconic monastery, dramatically situated on a cliffside high above the valley, you will descend and return to Paro Valley for the night.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, your trekking journey officially begins. The day’s destination is Jele Dzong, famous for its historic ruins and sacred Lhakhang featuring a statue of Gautama Buddha.
The adventure starts with a short drive to the National Museum of Bhutan, followed by a rewarding 3–4 hour hike to Jele Dzong. Along the route, take in stunning panoramas of Paro Valley, framed by snow-covered mountain peaks and the tranquil surroundings of the Dzong. In the evening, settle into the campsite to enjoy stargazing and reflect on the day’s unforgettable trekking experience.
Start the morning with a memorable visit to Jele Dzong before bidding farewell and trekking onward to Jangchulakha, situated at an elevation of 3,600 meters above sea level. After several hours on the trail, you will arrive at one of the highest points along the renowned Druk Path Trek route.
During the trek, you may spot yak herders near the campsite and admire spectacular views of Jomolhari along with other snow-covered Himalayan peaks. Following lunch, the route continues downhill through peaceful fir forests, eventually arriving at the picturesque Jimilangtsho area. Surrounded by the towering peaks of Jichu Drake, revered as the guardian mountain of Paro, and Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest mountain, the landscape offers a truly unforgettable Himalayan experience.
The trek toward Simkota begins from the southern edge of Jimilang Tsho, continuing through beautiful rhododendron forests until reaching Janye Tsho. Along the way, you will pass by Phajoding Monastery and Thujidrag Monastery, taking in the peaceful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere as you ascend toward the campsite.
During the hike, you may also encounter yak herder settlements, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of local Bhutanese communities. The day’s journey ends at Simkota, located at an elevation of around 4,110 meters, where you will settle in for the night surrounded by the high-altitude Himalayan landscape.
The day’s trek begins at Simkota with a gradual ascent, and if the weather is clear, you may enjoy sweeping views of Gangkar Puensum and other Himalayan peaks. The trail then winds deeper into forests of fir and rhododendron, following a stream toward Phajoding Monastery, a sacred site believed to have been blessed by Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century. Lunch is typically enjoyed in the Phajoding area
From Phajoding Monastery, the route descends steadily toward Thimphu. The trail is lined with blue pine forests and takes about three hours to complete before arriving in Thimphu for an overnight stay.
In Thimphu, it is a rewarding experience to visit the Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the third King of Bhutan, along with the Nunnery Temple, the National Library of Bhutan housing ancient manuscripts, the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan (School of Arts and Crafts), the traditional paper-making factory, and the impressive Tashichho Dzong.
After lunch, the journey continues from Thimphu toward Punakha, with a scenic stop at Dochula Pass at 3,100 meters for a short tea break. This pass is known for its 108 chortens (stupas) and panoramic views of rhododendron forests, pine trees, and traditional villages. From there, the route descends into the valley, where a walk through rice fields along the banks of the Puna Tsang Chhu leads you toward Punakha village.
While staying in Punakha, a visit to the magnificent Punakha Dzong is highly recommended. Located at the meeting point of the male and female rivers, the fortress is uniquely designed in the form of an anchored ship and remains one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks.
Following the visit, you will begin your journey toward Paro on a picturesque drive lasting around 3–4 hours (approximately 120 km). Along the way, you will stop at Metshina Village and take a short 20-minute walk through scenic rice fields to reach Chimi Lhakhang, the famous Fertility Temple dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, also known as the Divine Madman. If you wish, you may also receive blessings at the temple’s traditional wooden phallus symbol. The drive then continues back over Dochula Pass, where you can enjoy sweeping Himalayan views, and includes a stop at Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, a distinctive monastery with unique architecture and historical importance.
